How to Convert PNG to JPG
Make PNG photos much smaller by converting them to JPG. Covers the online tool, Windows and Mac methods, and when to avoid JPG.
PNG images are lossless and can be many times larger than a JPG of the same photo. If you are sending photos, uploading to the web, or hitting file-size limits, converting PNG to JPG is the simplest fix. Here is the step-by-step.
When converting PNG to JPG makes sense
- Your image is a photo (continuous tones) — you will barely notice the lossy compression.
- You need a smaller file for email, forms or a website.
- You need maximum compatibility — JPG opens everywhere.
When it does not
- Your image has transparency (a logo, sticker or cutout). JPG supports no transparency, so converting first removes it. If you need transparency, keep PNG or WebP.
- You are archiving an original and must keep it lossless.
How to convert with the online tool
The PNG to JPG converter walks you through it:
- Drag and drop one or more PNG files.
- If your image has transparent areas, choose a background color (white is a safe default).
- Pick a quality level — 85% is a good balance.
- Convert, then download the JPGs individually or in one ZIP.

Doing it without the tool
- Windows: open the PNG in Paint → File → Save as → JPEG.
- Mac: open in Preview → File → Export → choose JPEG.
- Photos app on iPhone/Mac: select photos → File *Convert* or *Duplicate with JPG*.
Will I lose quality?
JPG compression is lossy, but at quality 85 the difference is invisible on screen for photos while the file can be several times smaller. For a pure lossless alternative, keep PNG — you just pay with file size.
