Frequently asked questions

Why is PNG so much bigger than JPG?

PNG stores every pixel losslessly, while JPG compresses by discarding subtle detail. For photos, JPG can be several times smaller with no visible difference.

What happens to PNG transparency in a JPG?

JPG has no transparent channel, so transparent areas are filled with a solid color. Choose that color before converting — white is the safest default.

Does converting to JPG lose quality?

JPG uses lossy compression. At quality 85–90 (the default here) the difference is barely visible for photos, while the file can be much smaller.

Is my image sent to a server?

No. Conversion is done locally with your browser's canvas.
