How to Convert WebP to JPG
Open WebP files anywhere by converting them to JPG — online, on Windows and on Mac, plus tips on when WebP is actually better.
WebP is a modern image format used by many websites because it loads fast. The catch: some older programs, email clients and printers do not support it. When a WebP file will not open, converting it to JPG solves the problem in seconds.
Why WebP exists
Google introduced WebP to replace JPG and PNG: WebP photos are usually 25–35% smaller than the same JPG, and it supports transparency like PNG. It is excellent for websites — which is why you meet it so often while browsing. But because it is newer, support is patchy outside browsers.
How to convert WebP to JPG online
- Drag and drop one or more WebP files.
- Set a JPG quality if you want smaller output (85% is the sweet spot).
- Convert, preview, then download the JPGs individually or as a ZIP.
The conversion runs locally in your browser — files are not uploaded.
How to open WebP without converting
Sometimes you only need to *view* the file:
- Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari open WebP natively.
- Windows: add the free *WebP Image Extensions* from the Microsoft Store; the Photos app then opens WebP directly.
- Mac: recent macOS versions open WebP in Preview (older ones need a Quick Look extension).
Converting on your computer
- Windows: right-click → Open with → Paint → File → Save as → JPEG.
- Mac: open in Preview → File → Export → JPEG.
- Online: use the converter above — it also handles *bulk* conversion, which desktop apps rarely do well.
Should you keep WebP instead?
If the JPG is just for viewing or email, converting is fine. If you are running a website, keeping WebP is actually better for performance — serve WebP to browsers and only convert pages or files that need maximum compatibility.
