How to Compress an Image Without Losing Quality
Shrink JPG, PNG and WebP images for email and the web. Learn quality settings, resizing tricks and what to avoid — all free and in your browser.
Large images slow down websites, fail email size limits and fill up your drive. This guide shows you the reliable way to shrink JPG, PNG and WebP files without visibly damaging them.
The quick way: an online compressor

How much can you typically save?
Roughly, for the same visible quality:
- A photo-JPG compressed at 80% is often 40–70% smaller than one saved at maximum quality.
- A PNG photo converted to JPG is often 60–80% smaller — the biggest win available for photos.
- A PNG graphic or logo compresses best when you reduce its number of colors rather than its quality setting.
When should you avoid JPG?
- If the image has transparency (logos, stickers), keep PNG or WebP; convert instead with the PNG to JPG converter only if you do not need the transparency, and choose a background color first.
- If you must keep every pixel data exactly, use PNG instead of re-compressing a JPG.
Beyond compression: resizing
Often an image is huge mainly because its dimensions are huge. Resizing to the actual display size usually saves more than any quality setting, with zero visible difference. Try the Image Resizer to combine both ideas: resize *and* compress.
Best settings for common jobs
- Email attachments: resize to 1600px wide and compress at 75–80%.
- Social posts: choose your platform’s max width (1080–1920px) and compress at 80%.
